Photographing Wine Bottle With Only One Light Source

February 7, 2016

I think that any bottle (glass) product photograph is both quite challenging and also very rewarding. The main challenge comes from being able to constrain the reflections, make them soft and elegant and and to use them to your profit in order to create an interesting image. This type of product photography can get complicated pretty fast, especially when you’re dealing with many weird reflections and light sources. Therefore, sometimes the simplest solutions are the best. I have recently photographed a Rusack Wine Bottle and I started off with my typical setup and two light sources. My vision of the final image was a clean, classic and elegant image of the bottle but I also wanted to make it challenging for myself. The challenge? To have the already black bottle on black background.

I eliminated one of the lights after several trials and errors (mostly errors of trying to use the lights on both sides of the bottle). I placed the remaining speedlight behind the bottle and put a white plexiglass between the light source and the bottle. Next, I placed two black foam core boards on each side of the bottle in order to have black background. I left a very tiny space (not visible in the final picture) just behind the bottle for the light to go through. Last but not least, I used two white foam boards on each side of the bottle in order (see pic below) to get nice highlights on both sides. Once I photographed the bottle, it was time for the wine glass. I simply placed the glass in the background, a bit to the right from where the bottle was standing and I repositioned the white foam boards to have the highlights uniform on both sides of the glass. I ended up having two images which I brought to Photoshop for editing.

Five Ten Exum Guide Hiking Shoes

Five Ten Exum Guide Hiking Shoes

Hiking Shoes Promo & Catalog Product Photography

May 12, 2015

I challenged myself recently - I had to produce hiking shoes' catalog photograph  within 24 hours (this included pre- and post-production). At first, it sounded pretty easy: one photograph in one day. But as I started working on the assignment and I started adding new ideas and trying out different setups, time started to be a commodity which I didn’t have in this particular case. While the setup I used is fairly simple and post-processing wasn't too complicated, I thought I would share with you my process.

Photo Breakdown: Starbucks Espresso Coffee Mug Photo

March 1, 2014

I finally was able to put together a video on how I shot the Starbucks espresso coffee mug for the 'photo breakdown' series. If you haven't seen the photograph yet, it's just below the video.

Photo Breakdown: Photographing Breaking Bad Walter White's Pint Glass with one Speedlight

January 12, 2014

Many people have been asking me how I shot the Breaking Bad Walter White Pint Glass photo. The setup for this photo is very simple and I got an idea for it from Laya Gerlock's work and his lighting techniques.

Background and bokeh

I crumpled aluminum foil (lots of it) and attached it to a couple of foam boards, which I then put against the wall.  In order to get the nice bokeh effect of light reflecting from the foil, I used Nikkor 50mm f1.4 lens and I shot the photo in f1.4.

Lighting

I used only one speedlight, Nikon SB-700 with a blue gel on it. I used Phottix Odin TTL to trigger the flash manually with 1/64 power. The power of the flash will vary depending how far the subject and the background are from the camera.

Because the subject is a glass, the light goes through it quite nicely and there is no need for extra light.

Surface and the subject

The glass stands on a white 24"x24" acrylic sheet and the blue effect (and the reflection) comes entirely from the speedlights (no photoshop used). I put some water in the glass and added blue and green food coloring for the effect.

Editing

There is almost no editing, only small Lightroom processing, like cropping, little bit of vignette and clarity adjustments. That's all!

Photo Breakdown : Food Coloring in Water with Bokeh Lights

December 12, 2013

Recent cold Memphis weather (weird, right?) has forced me to stay indoor. I decided to take out my fish tank, fill it out with water and play with food coloring. It's a very simple setup and there is nothing artistic about the picture but I hope some of you will find the information useful.
