Nikon Coolpix P7800 not compatible with 3rd party flash triggers

November 7, 2013

I've recently bought Nikon Coolpix P7800. As a photographer who has been using only DSLRs for the past few years, I thought it was a perfect choice-  Coolpix P7800 has a hot shoe so it would be a great small camera for off-camera flash photography as well. Unfortunately, I got quickly disappointed when I discovered it doesn't work with neither Phottix Odin TTL for Nikon nor Phottix Strato Multi for Nikon. There is very little information about P7700 and P7800 compatibility with flash triggers and after several hours of research, it seems that they don't work with any 3rd party flash triggers (Phottix, PocketWizard, etc.).

Are you surprised? Me too especially because on the Nikon's website it says that "the COOLPIX P7800 includes a full-size accessory shoe" and on the Phottix's website is says that Odin is compatible with all nikon digital cameras and flashes and the only two camera's listed as not compatible are D70 and D70s.

I received a couple of emails from flash trigger manufacturers who say that their triggers work only with DSLRs. Nikon has not yet responded to my question why 3rd party flash triggers don't work with the Coolpix P7800's "full-size accessory shoe". It's yet unclear where is the fault for this incompatibility.
